Marbella is located in the south of Spain in the autonomous region of Andalucia and the province of Malaga. The town lies central in the Costa del Sol and gained popularity as a luxury holiday destination in the eighties and nineties of the last century. 

The most important reason for its popularity is without a doubt the climate.

All year round the weather is very mild and the average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius. When nearby towns have bad weather sometimes Marbella will be sunny because of its micro climate.

Property in Marbella

Marbella saw a property boom in the end of the nineties and the first couple of years of this century. When the credit crunch hit, prices started to decline and today, in general, prices are on the same level as the beginning of the century. Prices have dropped around a 30-40% since the peak of the market. 

Marbella has some very luxurious property to offer and since the crisis prices have come down to a levels where more people are able to own a property in Marbella.

Some of the more popular areas in Marbella are: Marbella East, Los Monteros, Elviria, El Rosario, Sierra Blanca, El Madroñal, Guadalmina, Golden Mile and La Zagaleta.

Why is Marbella a good place to own a property?

Marbella is a great place to live or own a holiday property and for more than one reason. As mentioned before the climate of Marbella is probably the strongest drawn, but by no means the only one. Marbella has a vibrant, cosmopolitan ambience due to the variety of nationalities in the area, next to the local Spanish the biggest groups are English, German, Dutch, Irish and Scandinavian.

Marbella has a vibrant nightlife and all year round there is something to do from sports, shopping, eating and drinking through to taking a stroll along the paseo or stopping for a coffee and watching the world go by. For the international society in Marbella there are international colleges, cinemas and of course international restaurants.

Gastronomy in Marbella

Marbella is also well appreciated for its great gastronomy. It offers several internationally renowned restaurants and a large range of different kitchens, from the traditional Spanish restaurants right through to the best Thai restaurants. The nearby village of Benahavis is well known as the gastronomic centre of the Andalucia region.

Beaches in Marbella

The beaches in Marbella are stunning, especially on the east side of town in the areas Elviria, los Monteros and Cabopino. Beach facilities tend to include sunbed and umbrella hire services, bathrooms and shower facilities, water sports options and there is normally a restaurant nearby. A stretch of 15 km of sandy beach connects all the areas of Marbella East.

Shopping in Marbella

Marbella also offers great shopping facilities. The most popular areas are shopping mall La Cañada, the port of Puerto Banus, Marbella Center and Marbella Old Town. In Puerto Banus you will find not only a Corte Inglés store, but in the port itself boutique stores from brands like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbanna, Boss and more.

In the town of Marbella you will find some exquisite boutiques within the old town through to the some of the larger chains like Mango, Zara, Springfield within the town centre. Based just outside of Marbella is the shopping mall of La Canada where you can find a variety of shops and eateries ranging from Marks & Spenser’s, TopShop, Bershka, Fnac, McDonalds, Tapas bars’, all the way through to a cinema and bowling alley.

Activities in Marbella

Marbella is perfectly situated to make daily excursions or weekend trips. Within a 2 hour drive you can reach historical places of interest like Granada, Seville, Cordoba and Jerez. These vibrant cities are ideal for weekend trips to enjoy culture and gastronomy.

Nature lovers can make escapes to the many natural parks around like the Sierra de las Nieves, Alcornocales, Montes de Malaga, Sierra Nevada and Doñana.

Sport fanatics can participate in activities like water sports, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing (Sierra Nevada) and many more. Organized sporting activities like tennis, football, rugby and paddle tennis are easy to find around Marbella.

Off course the major attraction for Marbella are its many golf courses.

Golf in Marbella

Marbella East alone hosts five 18-hole golf courses and three 9-hole golf courses, the best known are Rio Real Golf, Santa Maria Golf, Santa Clara Golf and Greenlife Golf. The majority of the golf courses can be found in Marbella West, the most important ones include Los Naranjos Golf, Las Brisas Golf, Aloha Golf and Paraiso Golf.

A little bit further from Marbella in Sotogrande (only 45 minutes by car from Marbella) are two of the best golf courses in Spain Valderama Golf, which has hosted The Volvo Open several times, and San Roque which is very well  appreciated as well.
